As of November 2024, Google’s Chrome is the leading internet browser in the world with a global market share of 67.48%. In other words, more than two-thirds of the global population uses Chrome to browse the internet. Apple’s Safari is in second place with 18.22%, nearly 50 percentage points behind. Together, Chrome’s and Safari’s shares add up to 85.7%, which means that more than four in five internet users worldwide use either Chrome or Safari as their default browser.

Microsoft Edge and Mozilla’s Firefox are the next two most used web browsers, with market shares of 4.84% and 2.6%, respectively. Samsung Internet and Opera wrap up the top six web browsers in the world with market shares of 2.18% and 2% respectively.

A breakdown of the browser market share over the past 12 months reveals that Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox have maintained their first, second, third, and fourth positions, respectively. However, the remaining two browsers, Samsung Internet and Opera, each with market shares of around 2–3%, have been exchanging positions as their shares fluctuate from month to month.

Zooming into the internet browser market shares on different devices, Chrome continues to dominate as the most popular browser on desktops with a market share of 66.31%. It is followed by Microsoft Edge with 12.91%, and Safari completes the top three with 9.13%

Chrome also leads as the most popular web browser on mobiles, with a market share of 68.69%. But unlike on desktops, Safari ranks next and is followed by Samsung Internet. As of November 2024, their market shares are 22.89% and 3.47%, respectively.

Chrome’s market share for tablets tells a different story. While it is still the most popular browser, its lead significantly narrows. At 49.69%, its lead over Safari’s 33.24% market share is just 16.45 percentage points. Android ranks third, with a market share of 14.42%.

The market shares of the most popular browsers also vary according to region. For instance, Chrome and Safari continue to be the two most used web browsers in the US, but the gap separating them is significantly smaller than on a global scale.

Chrome’s internet browser market share in the US is 54.42% with Safari relatively close behind at 32.55%.

Likewise, Chrome dominates as the leading internet browser in China, with a share of 48.39%, which means that close to half of internet users there are Chrome users. Safari and Edge follow in second and third places, respectively.

The fourth- and sixth-most-popular web browser, UC Browser, and QQ Browser, are developed by local companies. UC Browser has a market share of 8.92% while QQ Browser’s share is 5.76%. 360 Safe ranks in fifth place, with 6.4%.

In Japan, Chrome, Safari, and Edge’s combined market shares total 92.77%. In other words, more than nine in 10 internet users there use either one of these three as their default browser. Firefox, Samsung, and Opera complete the top six.
